Maisy Crow's "Love Me"

I was telling you about this last night as we drove, but I wanted to help you see what I was trying to describe. Hell, I want everyone to see these amazing shots...

Just one second in time, snap.
And you have a rich, complex story.

And there you have why I love photography.

Maisy Crow is a photojournalist who recently claimed the Ian Perry award for her series in progress, "Love Me." It is a story of a 15-year old Ohio girl raised in poverty...just as her mother and her mother's mother were.

Can you imagine being the photographer here? How to capture these organic moments? How to be a fly on the wall when there is obviously a good amount of shame and embarrassment on their part attached to your being there. It's not a task for the weak-of-heart.

But then again, neither is living.
Especially for this girl.

See the entire series here, including captions.

Things that make me smile Wednesday

Bon Matin, friend. You are off gallivanting in Oregon, painting under trees and living your calling as a dryad. I am here with your kitty boys and we are smiling at these things:

This print made me smile, but mainly because of the quote on the bottom! "One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art." Oscar Wilde
A mantra to live by indeed!

Lolita is a new blog I found a few weeks ago,and of course I would love it because of the name. However, I love it more because everyday she inspires me with some sort of amazing photograph. This bubble bath photo makes me smile.

These perfectly vintage Victorian pumps make me smile.

It seems that every week I am posting about something I found at DesiretoInspire and today is no exception. It's really just such wonderful eye-candy, that blog.

This couch makes me smile. It encompasses my style so well...I want it.

Loves on this cloudy, perfect Wednesday.

Things that make me smile Wednesday 5/20

good morning. hope you find some smiles today. here's my inspiration:

"Today there is no audience," print via one of my new favorite blogs: Swirly Girl. She writes a lot about writing and does it so soulfully and honestly. I've loved every entry since I started following.

I showed these udon noodle bowls to joel as soon as I saw them via SoulPretty. How we grinned with the cleverness!

this may be my minimalist husband's idea of visual hell, but how i smile at the thought of such a room! so wrought with memories, color, and age. i want!
(photographer Damien Russell found via desire to inspire)

the idea of writing my weekly letters on such a whimsical, nostalgic, romantic notepad makes me smile indeed.
(found on Reverie Daydream)

Ever since our Emily posted the recipe for these cookies on her ever-lovely blog, I have kept the page open so I could make them. I would say these are guaranteed to make me smile...must get to grocery store!

i am seriously sighing (is that the same thing as smiling?) with nostalgic whimsy at a dining room with all these books! i love the victorian appeal of the room anyway, but add books?!! sigh.

Things that make me smile wednesday 5/3

Ready for a smiley time?

This fireside nook makes me smile with deep longing.

This happy mustard dress from sunday brunch makes me grin from ear to ear as I reminisce about our ladies brunches...

I smile with great color appreciation at this pop of teal in the room.

I am smiling with AWE at this photograph.

Happy Wednesday!

visual image of the day

on this quiet and candlelit friday evening in march, i find myself looking back through my google reader for an image i saw this morning. it was posted by Desire to Inspire as a tribute to Lesley Dilcock.

i just love the cute, intimate simplicity of it.
i know you are under the weather - so may you hide in an umbrella with your man donning your underoos.
loves,
mme.

visual image of the day

i see a lot on the internet. you see a lot on the internet. we are inundated daily with millions of images...pictures of gorgeous artwork, words, and fashion tantalize my eyes hourly (rather, the hours i allow myself to be on the internet). today, at the end of the day, after sorting through all that remains in my lens, one image still lingers in my mind's eye.

today's winner is a canadian clothing designer, Obakki. the website has a few stellar photographs of their clothing (though, admittedly, i am not really looking at it), but this one really stuck with me...a gorgeous photograph, a brilliant play on light and color, an unassuming model, a windy frock, a good sea...

tonight i will sleep with visions of obakki in my head,
mme.

things that remind me of you

in my internet sojourning, i continually stumble upon things that remind me of you...certain little wisps of things that seem to be made of the same soul stuff as you. [unfortunately, some of these items found on etsy are sold because i have been compiling this list for some time!]

i can see you sauntering down to our tea shop in this little day dream dress:

one of the first things that intrigued me about you and your art is your fascination with the cycles of life. i love the strange bone collections on display in your house and thought this would be just perfect for around your neck: the pterodactyl necklace.

This loop redwood and buttercup ring seems like the perfect extension of your love and identification with redwoods.

In fact, I found quite a few "redwoody" things that share your song.

I see you fluttering about your studio with happy and somber purpose, nourishing your soul and giving a rare and beautiful show to others in the process...perhaps wearing something unassuming and comfy as this hummingbird tee:

In these cold months, we are privileged enough to live in a place that actually benevolently gives us weather! With weather comes accessories! This hooded scarf and sally green coat belongs with you:

I love stumbling across you all over the internet,

I am very proud to announce the publication of Umberdove's official website. Please go see what this girl is made of...

a day in the life (of my internet browser)

mmmmorning cute little black bird. are you flittery and fluttery today after last night's jauntings to TWO, yes, TWO restaurants? how lewd of us.

as i eat my mid-morning snack of apple and aqua, i have decided to twitter about the links on my site under visual inspiration. Here goes!

Link #1 -From 3191: a year of evenings. I am amazed at how these girls do this and often think of the process/communication involved. Do you think they say something about a color they might use that evening? If I were doing that project, I would spend ALL evening EVERY evening snapping away to make sure I got THE shot, you know? Well, it's stunning - all my banter aside. If I had to take a picture from the evening, it may/may not include cocktails at The Saint and a bottle of wine at Thomas St. Bistro.

Moving on to link #2: Apartment Therapy. Unfortunately, today's posting was about collapsible wheel barrows. IF we had a garden and IF we were inclined to spend money on a wheelbarrow instead of the Spring 2008 Prada Fairy Bag then perhaps this would be relevant. But here you go, nonetheless.

But I DO love this post, which was added in the hour it took me to put this together. You know how much I love me the library and encourage its use!

On to link #3: April Greer Photography
As we have seen FIRST HAND, April is one of the most wowza photographers in Seattle. I don't check her website often, but I do read her blog quite a bit. Today's picture is taken from that:

The 4th link is one of my PERSONAL FAVORITES: Visually Ink Lined (pronounced inklined, in my mind...not INK...LINED). It's this great new blog I discovered! It's two friends & neighbors, both artists (in their different genres) who have this adorable blog full of visual inspiration on design, art, fashion, photography, writing, restaurants...well, you get the point. Random, giggly, whimsical, and fierce - those women. I hope I get to meet them some day b/c they are so the next big thing, in case you didn't know. I wish they would take a business picture together so I could post it here. hhmmmm. Ideas for photo shoot?

The 5th link is Design Sponge: Today's entry is a little funny - but also useful. It's the DIY of a six-pack caddy. Though used here for condiments, I am thinking of something else when I hear six-pack, I don't know about you. Perhaps we can throw this together for next week's camping trip?!! What you doing tonight!??? :) (i have been having art envy as you make amazing things all day and i can't remember the last time i touched my watercolors!)

Link #6 has been somewhat disappointing to me since I have added it. Domino Mag's daily dose blog, but today's is rather bright and cheery. This lamp makes me feel so good...just like the bathroom at The Saint last night, so bright and full of happy energy. Not to mention, it would look so great in your new living room!

Link #7 is one of my former students photography site, Still Shutter. He is a rather talented and mysterious young man, but a stunning photographer. He is one of those artists to whom you are happy to attach yourself and watch the process of his art unfold before your eyes. I hope he gets some more in his portfolio soon.

Link #8 is the photographer for whom Erin works. She doesn't have her own site yet, but I have it up there as a means of supporting her. Here is a picture of her that he took.
Next link is SF Girl by the Bay which YOU turned me on to! Today's post is two-fold, and I am grabbing the second. She has been really instrumental for my progress in the visual arts - design and color and whimsy! This post is about film sets, and I just love it. My favorite one she posted? Cliche, perhaps...but also very classic: (It was a toss up b/w that and Pulp Fiction)

Last but not list on my listling of linklings is Melissa's (our blog friend in Arizona) photography website : SweetBeePhoto. What a talented lady. (One of my favorite shots which may or may not be our very own PLUME.)

It's amazing how looking at beautiful things moves me, awakens me, inspires me, and calms me. Perhaps you have known this about yourself for some time - but my precious birdling, I am just discovering my wings.

wednesday, day 2 of your absence

it's official. i am getting sick. dang it.

in news: i thought this might be interesting to do together:

Gardening tips for city folk
Seattle Tilth, a local sustainable gardening advocacy group, is holding a series of free classes this summer to teach organic container gardening and composting to apartment and condo dwellers. Several will be held 5-7 p.m. at Victor Steinbrueck Park in downtown Seattle at the north end of Pike Place Market (2001 Western Ave.).
Learn veggie container gardening June 25, apartment composting July 2, culinary herb gardening July 9 and organic pest and disease control July 17. http://www.seattletilth.org/

We do have to pre-register, but it's free.

Also, I am interested in going to the SAM - impressionists on view there right now. you?

As well as the Asian Art Museum at Volunteer Park, no?
Looks like I will have to quit my job just to keep up with all the things I want to do with you!

Well, I just took a nap in the lounge, and my throat still hurts. I was supposed to have lunch with Jessica, but had to bail b/c I feel so shitty. I am now eating leftover pesto pasta and wish I had opted to spend money instead on soup.

Here is the etsy homepage for this afternoon. Again, not anything interesting to me.

oh, isn't this just delicious for the eyeballs?

Love their stuff.

wouldn't it be fun to take a candace/kelly trip to Portland? We could just wander around and look and local shops and eat fresh farm food and other such "urban hippie" activities...also, I would want to go and see THIS exhibit from SF Girl's blog (i am becoming a rather frequent reader of such things).

smooch, ma'am.
